12:00 AM, 18-JANUARY-06 WB Eager For Spike Film David Janollari, president of entertainment at The WB network, told reporters that the network is eager to air a movie based on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer character of Spike (James Marsters), if only creator Joss Whedon were available. "We'd ... love to do a Spike movie with Joss Whedon," Janollari said in a news conference at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif. But, Janollari added, "Joss Whedon is busy, fast becoming a kind of a big feature filmmaker. He's currently working on an adaptation of Wonder Woman for Warner Brothers. He's simply not available to us. But he knows, and you guys all know, the door is open any time that he wants to do that, for us to do that movie." In the meantime, Marsters, who played the vampire character in both Buffy and its WB spinoff series, Angel, has a recurring role on The WB's Superman series Smallville. Whedon has been tapped to write and direct a Wonder Woman movie and is also developing a supernatural movie, Goners. He last helmed the SF movie Serenity. But he has also said that he's interested in returning to the Buffyverse with a TV movie at some point. For his part, Marsters has expressed interest if the film can come together before he's too old to play the supposedly ageless vampire.

TV News: MARSTERS RETURNS TO SMALLVILLE, WELLING SIGNED TO DIRECT
By: NUTS MCDOUGAL
LOCATION: Smallville THE SKINNY: James Marsters returns as Dr. Milton Fine aka Brainiac in the new story arc on SMALLVILLE beginning with "Hypnotic" airing in the Spring. In the new arc, according to The WB, Brainiac returns to manipulate Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) obsession with the spaceship to trick him into helping free General Zod from the Fortress of Solitude. At the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, CA today, The WB also announced that Tom Welling will be helming an episode of SMALLVILLE later this season.

Smallville Star: The Lex Is Yet to Come
At the end of "Lexmas," Smallville's last fresh episode, Lex Luthor — having seen a semi-idyllic (and also semi-tragic) possible future flash before his eyes — vows to use any means possible to win election to the Kansas state senate against his opponent, Jonathan Kent. The moment was chilling, and not because of all of the prop snow. TV Guide went to Michael Rosenbaum for the scoop on the WB drama's brand-new episode, "Fanatic" (airing tonight at 8 pm/ET), and Lex's descent into total villainy.
TV Guide: When I spoke to series creator Al Gough before the season premiere, he was looking forward to the Michael Rosenbaum-James Marsters (Professor Fine/Brainiac) dynamic. How did you like it?
TV Guide: You're "the transfer student from Belgium."
TV Guide: When is Marsters returning to Smallville? Sooner rather than later?

Question: What's the deal with James Marsters and Smallville — is he coming back or isn't he? And how's the Aquaman pilot coming along? — Craig Ausiello: No official word on Marsters re: Smallville, but as I've said before, the plan is for him to return after he completes work on the straight-to-DVD thriller Shadow Puppets, which you can get your first look at here. And as far as Aquaman goes, they just cast some newbie named Will Toale in the lead role, so things seem to be moving along, well, swimmingly. (That never gets old. Never!)

HU Faith @ FivebyFive TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY: I've got disappointing news for all those Ask Ausiello readers who weighed in on who should play Veronica Mars’ Aaron Echolls in my Armchair Casting Director challenge. Over the weekend, exec producer Rob Thomas informed me that he's "$100,000 over budget on that episode and we're losing the role." Damn budgets! I'll have more on this in Wednesday's AA. In the meantime, here's some Twins scoop to cheer you up! Nick Lachey has been cast as the new marketing director of Arnold Undergarments, the lingerie company run by Darlene Conner and that blonde chick from Passions. As of now, the burned Newlywed is only booked for one episode during February sweeps, but producers are hoping he'll do more. Kinda takes the sting outta that whole Armchair Casting Director fiasco, right? Didn’t think so.

Okay the latest info I've managed to squeeze out of my sources: The editing is going well and from what I've heard the cast is looking fantastic! Having the priorities that I do, I of course asked how James' performance was and was told he (as always) gave 150% and just knocks it out of the park. Beyond the performance, he spends a portion of the movie in his boxers - ladies, prepare to THUD! Oh, and supposedly James gets a good action sequence or two (and we know how well he can kick butt!) I also heard that Tony Todd gives an incredible intense performance every time he's onscreen as well. I CAN'T WAIT to see the two of them together onscreen!!! I don't get the sense that any decisions can/will be made about theatrical release until the edit is done or closer to done, BUT they still absolute WANT a theatrical release. Other news is that they're hoping to get a website up about the film in February or March, with some more pics and stuff from the film! If/when I find out more, I'll post! But feel free to pass this info on wherever you feel folks might be interested. Jill

Ok, I just checked the official site and when you click on their list of current productions it says Shadow Puppets [RFD March 2006], so I'm assuming that'd be an indication of the release date.

Question: Man! I just found out about your Veronica Mars Armchair Casting Couch Director challenge and am so upset I missed my chance to cast my vote for Jimmy Kimmel. Oh well… but give it up: Who won? — John Ausiello: After tallying all 1,042 votes, Falcon Crest's Lance Cumson won by a mere chest hair. Here's the final breakdown:
Lorenzo Lamas: 25%
Others receiving multiple votes: Rob Lowe, Tim Daly, Adam Baldwin, Michael Ausiello (I love you guys!), Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Ontkean, Kato Kaelin, Dale Midkiff, Jeremy Piven, Mark Hamill, Peter Reckell and BSG's Richard Hatch. Now for the $4 million question: Will exec producer Rob Thomas go with AA readers' first choice, Lamas, or pull a Buffy trifecta and side with runner-up Marsters? Or might he pick someone else altogether? Well, I just sent him this list yesterday, so give the poor guy a few days to make some phone calls. I'll (hopefully) have an update for you in next week's AA. Thanks to everyone who played!
