Moviehole MailBag - 28/4/05

About Spike, and Angel...I think I'd like to see Spike made human, (or bewitched with a spell so he looks more human) so he can get older-seeing as James Marsters isn't going to stop getting older if he keeps breathing. Id also like to see (or maybe just hear, like Charlie, in Charlie's Angels) more of Andy Hallett, green or not...I miss Lorne/the Host on Angel. If we just hear him, like Charlie-he could still be Lorne...just not green. 0 hours in make-up.
WB, what do you think? I'd watch.
Terri

Well,.. WB?

Hi! I was wondering if you had any information or could comment on the following.
As I understand it, Eliza Dushku decided to do “Tru Calling” instead of the Faith spin-off so she could try a different character. Since “Tru Calling” has been cancelled, has there been any renewed talk of the Faith spin-off? There didn't seem to be any bad blood between her and Joss Whedon regarding her decision to do “Tru Calling”, as I understood it, so what would be stopping this? It would have no effect on any Spike-centric projects, as the Faith spin-off was rumoured not to include any other Buffyverse characters. Although Eliza Dushku and James Marsters together in a spin-off ... pure heaven!
Anything? Even wild speculation would be appreciated, if it keeps my hopes alive!
Mac

Mac,
Funnily enough, and despite the fact that, yep, “Tru Calling” is gone; there’s been no chat about the “Faith” spin-off. I think Joss has gone and got himself busier than a Mr Whippy at the beach – what with “Serenity” and “Wonder Woman” - so don’t count on him having the time to organize said spin-off. It’s still a good idea though…here’s my fingers crossing for you. Cling.

Hi,
I'm an Italian fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and I have just created a new Site Web or Fan List about the future Spike Spin-off or Movie. Enjoy
Sara

Sara,
As soon as I finish here on theprivatevideosoftoddbridges.com – I’ll come have a squiz.

Hey, I just gotta say, I am a HUGE fan of the entire “Buffy” series, but I hate the character of Spike, and cannot believe that is the only possibility of a spin-off whether it be a movie or not. I never cared much for the Angel series, but once they put Spike on that show I never watched it again. I know I am in the minority, but I just don't get how people like such a dull character, when in fact what made his character was the other characters in the show. Is there any news on the Buffy animated series? I'd rather see that then a Spike movie
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
You’re the first blondie basher we’ve had. I think the fans still outweigh you…..I dunno, maybe we could set up a jelly wrestling competition? As for the animated “Buffy” series – it’s a goer. [A couple of people have asked me to expand....yes, the show is being made, but as for whether it's going to get a run....who knows. We need a network to pick it up. Tony Head recently said : "...it IS being made and the scripts are really, really good." Here's crossing everything that a network picks it up soon or, at the very least, it gets a DVD outing.]

Stonehenge rocks!

Love your fertility symbols, I'm awash in corn dollies and stone mushrooms. Bristol has the best Chinese food in the West Country. Wish I could've stayed longer.

Thanks to Alan for his axe. The Taylor guitar's back in full action, my fingers aren't bleeding and I'm looking forward to London.

So good to see my mate Tony Head and his beautiful daughters at the concert.

Metro: James Marsters Interview
From: http://www.metro.co.uk/metro/interviews/interview.html?in_page_id=8&in_interview_id=1071

James Marsters
by Andrew Williams, April 27th, 2005

Actor James Marsters is best known for playing peroxide blond vampire Spike on cult hit TV shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, where his frequent appearances sans top won him a legion of lady admirers. As well as acting, Marsters is a musician. He is touring Britain and is in negotiations to release his album on a major label.

What kind of reception do you get playing gigs in Britain?
It's off the hook. In Britain, you have to prove yourself more. You guys know how to make your own music here. It's cool to watch the guys in the back of the house stand there with their arms folded at the start of the gig and, by the end, see them with their arms over their heads and screaming - that is really good.

I assumed the majority of the audience would be Buffy fans.
Yeah, I don't fool myself, dude, but a lot of the fans of the TV show are also rock fans, so there's quite a big crossover. I was in theatre all my life before Buffy and it was always like: 'How do we get butts into seats?' Now, for the first time in my life, I don't have to worry about that but the concern is: 'How do I get those butts jumping and happy?'

Buffy fans are renowned for their loyalty. Are any of them a bit demented about it?
People look to entertainment for passion. We go through our lives most days feeling kind of grey so we want to hang out with artists who will give us a wonderful evening but who would probably give us headaches if we saw them all the time. We artists give the fire. That was what marked my performance on Buffy and Angel - the brutal passion of it. People respond to something if they think it's sincere. I find that there are people who really want to release into the fantasy of Buffy and have a world they can escape to - and then there are people who just want a nice ride once a week. I find there's a high amount of passion in both of those groups.

60 SECONDS EXTRA!: Why have you decided to make an album rather than go straight back to acting?
I did - I went straight back into acting. The album almost fell apart because I went to Canada to make a film called Cool Money. It's definitely a question of balance but right now is the slow time in Hollywood - it's winding down for the summer so it's a good time to tour. I've had to balance work all the time - I used to produce shows and act at the same time. I've always had my cake and eaten it. You just have to keep making more cake.

You trained at Juilliard - a highly respected American acting institute. How did that prepare you to play Spike?
I suggest people avoid Juilliard as it will sap the fun out of any young artist they get their hands on. It was a horrible, nightmarish experience and people should stay away from it. The success I got out of Spike was by dumping all that technique. The reason Spike took off was because me and my then girlfriend were having the most outrageous sex I've ever had in my life and I felt like the tallest man in the world. It was just dripping off me. I brought that into the audition and the first few episodes, then took that as a talisman for the rest of the show. That's what it was down to.

What are your musical influences?
I'd describe the sound as Jake Jackson meets Jet. There are a lot of punk influences in my chord progressions and Joni Mitchell in terms of melody - there's a kind of folk and jazz influence there.

When did you start doing gigs?
I was performing in bars when I was 15. I was doing James Taylor covers. He really is a genius. I did some acoustic versions of Ramones songs too - finding out how to make an acoustic guitar rock. I concentrated on acting when I left school and my guitar became something just for myself and remained so until I started on Buffy. Club owners found out I played the guitar and booked me to do covers sets and then I started writing my own material and started the band.

You dyed your hair blond for seven years during your time on Buffy. Do you have any hair-care tips for our readers?
I say if it doesn't hurt then do it. My scalp got really dry and painful. Sometimes they'd come in to bleach it and I'd end up on the floor in the foetal position because it was so sore. I'm not bleaching it any more - it's micro-short now so I can just get out of bed and it's done.

You were named Sexiest Male Vampire 2002 by a London vampire cult - is that an honour?
It's always an honour to be named sexy. I was a poor artist for a long time. There weren't many people calling me sexy then.

JAMES HITS THE ROAD

James kicked off the first leg of his Live In Five tour in style with a packed gig in Liverpool. he quickly followed it up tonight (or last night, since it's now 1:30am) to a sweaty and appreciative audience in Leeds.

Late breaking news James has said he will be handing out the signed CDs to the audience members at the UK album launch in Coventry on Monday. For those of you who have been asking whether you would have a chance to give James a gift in person, this would be the right occasion.

And just to give you an idea of life on the road... http://www.jamesmarsterslive.com

Joanne Weintraub Chat: Spike Movie
From: http://www.jsonline.com/enter/tvradio/apr05/320535.asp

FRIDAY, APRIL 22, chat transcript
Joanne Weintraub
Journal Sentinel television critic

Joanne Weintraub talks about what's new on television in her monthly chat.

Q: Mary of Madison - Are you going to the network upfronts for their new seasons? If so, could you ask David Janollari of The WB how the Buffy/Angel movies are coming? Specifically a Spike movie or spinoff starring James Marsters?

A: Joanne Weintraub - Wish I had some info for you, Mary, but the fan sites are ominously silent on the subject of a new Buffy movie. Not a good sign. As you probably know, Joss Whedon recently finished the screenplay for his Serenity feature, based on the old (well, not so old) Firefly series, and is supposed to start work on the Wonder Woman movie shortly, so Buffy/Angel/Spike don't seem to be on anyone's front burner. Re the May upfronts in NYC, those are sessions for advertisers who want to sample the new "product" in the spring; I don't get to cover those. Instead, I go to the press tour for critics in July & January in L.A., where we get to see later, more complete cuts of the pilots. It's always interesting to read what comes out of the upfronts, though.

Moviehole MailBag - 21/4/05
Posted on Thr, 21-Apr-2005

Hi Folks. I’m jetting off for a couple of days (don’t worry, Adam Weeks – email him here – will be manning the site, so requests for Naomi Watt’s measurements will probably still be answered) so don’t have much time to answer all the mail you’ve sent this week. Here’s this weeks greatest hits though….

Lately there has been a lot of discussion about the possibility of a Spike Movie or Spin-off. I would just like to voice my opinion on the subject and say that I think this would be an awesome idea. Buffy and Angel were two of the very best shows ever to grace our TV screens and it stands to reason that a continuation of the Buffy/Angel Verse in the form of a SPIKE ANYTHING would be wonderful.Reunite him with some of the other cast members from both shows and it would be perfect. Spike is one of the most fascinating and popular characters in Television history. His charisma is largely due to the creative genius of Joss Whedon, but even more so to the extraordinary acting of one James Marsters, who literally brought this ‘undead’ hero to LIFE.
Personally I could watch James Marsters just read the phone book for hours, and I would be mesmerized, but I would love to see Marster’s incredible talent and gorgeous good looks back on my TV screen or the big screen VERY SOON. Hopefully there will be many new roles in his future. If a Spike movie or Spin off is possible…I am all for it. Not only will I watch it…I will tape it and then later buy the DVDs. I honestly can not say I would do that for anything else on TV today…so come on networks…GIVE US MORE SPIKE and JAMES MARSTERS. I would also like to thank you as a member of the media, for supporting the fans efforts to get this movie and for all the kind words and great press you give Spike, the character and James, the man. Trust me, it is truly appreciated.
Kathy

Kathy,
Happy to support any card-carrying member of the Sunnydale Saviors department. And don’t despair, there’s still a good chance blondie bear’s telemovie will happen.

Dear Clint,
I am excited to read that there is talk of doing a Spike telemovie and that both Joss Whedon and James Marsters are interested. Spike, in my opinion, is one of the most intriguing characters to come out of the Buffyverse. It was hinted at very early on that Spike wasn't quite like other vampires. Thus making him unique long before Angel got a soul. Now having a soul of his own, he provides an excellent metaphor for exploring the human condition in ways that Joss and the talented people on his writing team have yet to explore. I hope we get a chance to see Spike and several other characters from the Whedonverse again.
Jennifer Killingsworth
Tallahassee, FL

Hey, it’s another Spike Fan!
Are we the target of a mass media hit? Couldn’t afford the pretty van with the banner on the side? Regardless, I’m sure you’re helping with WB’s decision. Fingers crossed.

She may have hung up her stakes, but Sunnydale's most famous vampire slayer has not been forgotten by her legion of Australian fans.

The achievements of Buffy Summers and members of her loyal Scooby Gang will be celebrated in Melbourne in July at the third annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel Convention, when fans will be joined by stars Anthony Stewart Head, James Marsters and writer and co-executive producer David Fury.

Fury has since gone on to write for the hit J.J. Abrams series Lost.

As well as the usual convention fare of Q&A sessions and autograph signings, the quickest fans - the Hi-Fi Bar gig is already sold out - will preview music from Marsters' debut solo album, Civilized Man.

James Marsters Learns of Library Donation
From: http://www.whedonverse.org/news/jm-donation.htm

Whedonverse News...

James Marsters Learns of Library Donation

Representatives of the Whedonverse Multimedia Project attended Houston SlayerCon from March 31 - April 4. While we didn't have anything big planned for fans, we did have a little special something for James Marsters.

The portrait to your left was printed on the front of a card that I, as organizer of the Project, handed to Mr. Marsters during the Platinum Ticket Holders autograph and gift-giving session on Saturday April 2nd.

James had an expression of awe on his face as he looked at the card. "Did you draw this?"

I explained that Erin Allen (erinallen.com), who had previously drawn portraits of him as MacBeth and Spike, did the artwork. We thought it would be nice for James to have a portrait that looks like himself now. I then handed him the original artwork, which was a 5' x 7' pencil drawing that I had placed in a silver frame.

I told him that I was the organizer of a group called the Whedonverse Multimedia Project that donates Buffy, Angel and Firefly DVDs to public libraries. I told him that in the weeks prior to the convention that his fans donated a whole bunch of DVDs to the Modesto Public Library in appreciation for his work.

His face absolutely lit up and he said that the project was a "really great idea." I think he said some other things too, but I have a hard time remembering my own name after taking to such a charming and handsome man. I am a big fan after all. Suffice to say, he was quite pleased.

I further explained my hopes that if more people get to see him and all the others who brought the Whedonverse to life that they would fall in love with their work too and follow everyone's careers from here onward.

Then I got a hug!

I meant to say something during the Q&A session for James, but it didn't quite work out the way I had hoped, plus I'm not sure anyone would have heard me since fans weren't supplied with microphones. My apologies for not making a formal announcement at the event.

All total, the Project donated 2 complete sets of Buffy (Seasons1-7), 2 complete sets of Angel (seasons 1-5) and a copy of the Firefly series. In addition, one fan donated a complete set of Buffy on her own.

Thanks to fans, the Modesto Public Library and those living within the Stanislaus County Library System will have much greater access to these materials due to your generous support.

Marsters on Spike and Dresden movies
Posted on Mon, 4-Apr-2005

Like Kenobi was the rebels last hope, Spike is the Buffy-world's closing chance.

James Marsters appeared at Houston's Slayercon last week and announced that he's still very keen to reprise his role as bottle-blond bloodsucker Spike in a telemovie for the WB.

Marsters said he's very keen to reprise the character - stressing that it would be for TV, not a theatrical release. He said they should get going on it right away - before he gets too old.

Asked whether he thinks a "Buffy" or "Angel" film - for theatres - will ever happen, Marsters said : "If I was Sarah’s [Michelle Gellar] manager I would tell her not to do it yet. Sarah is a great actress and I’d say she needs to get a Golden Globe before she does Buffy [again]".

Marsters says he's also in consideration to star in a film about literary detective, Harry Dresden. "Lions Gate is working on it but they are not very far along. My name is still being batted about but they are very far away from doing it".

Thanks to Cold Dead Seed and SupportSpike.com for the transcript, Whedonesque for the heads up.

Watch with Kristin: Whedonverse Poll Results
From: http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Kristin/Archive2005/050401.html

Classified Intel (Shhh...) on Alias' Jen and Michael; Plus, Bachelor Dish and a James Marsters Wish
by Kristin Veitch | Apr. 1, 2005

Spike It! Sure, the shows were called Buffy and Angel, but the results of our recent Whedonverse Poll prove that it's Spikey--James Marsters--who has the never-say-die, die-hard following. Granted, I'm not surprised by the winner, given the postcards, emails, fruit baskets and flowers over the past months (I also just received bags of M&M candies with "James Rocks" printed on them and am currently nursing an overly yummified stomach). That said, you know I'm going to show you the poll results, but before I do, I just want to say: These are the real numbers. No cheating. No tinkering. So, any of you still harboring conspiracy theories from our Save One Show poll can rest assured.

More than 36,000 of you voted, and you said these are the top 10 characters you'd most like to see in a Whedonverse spinoff:

1. Spike (James Marsters) 42%
2. Faith (Eliza Dushku) 21%
3. Willow (Alyson Hannigan) 8%
4. Illyria (Amy Acker) 6%
5. Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) 5%
6. Xander (Nicholas Brendon) 4%
7. Wesley (Alexis Denisof) 3%
8. Connor (Vincent Kartheiser) 2%
9. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) 2%
10. Tara (Amber Benson) 1%

Anya (Emma Caulfield) also earned one percent, but garnered fewer votes than Tara; and Lorne (Andy Hallett), Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg), the Geek Trio (Danny Strong, Tom Lenk and Adam Busch) and Gunn (J. August Richards) all pulled in less than one percent of the total.

Meanwhile, James is waiting (as I mentioned a couple weeks back when we posted the poll), ready and willing to do anything Spike-alicious as long as it's within the next five years); Eliza Dushku is also free (even though Tru Calling came back this week, it's still officially canceled): Alyson Hannigan is bouncing from show to pilot to pilot and, clearly, looking for a permanent home; and Amy--even though she's a new mother and was recently cast in a CBS pilot--should be easy enough for Joss to wrangle, since she's invited to Sunday night Shakespeare readings at his house.

So, after Serenity hits the big screen, we can only presume (with fingers and toes and eyeballs crossed) that the Whedonverse will swing back into action with a spinoff, telepic or movie, starring one Mr. James Marsters (among others, naturally).

Pretty please, Joss? With extra-delicious M&M sprinkles on top?
