Spike vs. Dracula #4

Here is my Spike vs. Dracula cover for issue #4. Because of time constraints I wasn't able to color this one myself or contribute to issue #5. This cover is definitely my favorite of the bunch. It was a lot of fun drawing Spike and Drusilla is such a romantic context, and yet still be able to give it a little dash of horror.

JM.com: May Q&A
From: http://www.jamesmarsters.com/qa.html

James Answers Your Questions!

Here is this month's session. Enjoy! (Again, with extras!)

You do such a beautiful job portraying the women in the Dresden audio books. How did you approach these characters emotionally and vocally?

Emotionally it's very easy to portray a woman because women are human beings just like me, so there's not a big need to change the internal. That's the lesson that Shakespeare taught me early on. Shakespeare wrote great women because he wrote great human beings and then cast great transvestites to play them.

Can you explain the different responsibilities of a manager, an agent, and a publicist, and do you have one of each?

An agent gets you the auditions and opportunities. A manager evaluates the opportunities and helps oversee the total career. A publicist handles your image in all forms of the public eye. Yes, I do have all of these people in my professional life.

In season 5 of Angel, Joss was excited about an episode that had Spike in a dress. He even references it in his WB letter on their website. But in the final version of the episode, the scene wasn't included. Can you tell us if it was filmed and if so, why it wasn't included. If it wasn't filmed, do you have any idea why?

The reason was that Steve DeKnight and I were drowning in the toilet trying to complete this episode (I can't remember the title - the only one he directed that year). I tried to make it work but it would have doubled the amount of work that day to have my character change from the black coat to a dress. Pitifully, it was a money issue.

I recently saw a play in a restored theater that is over 150 years old and I felt a strong sense of its history and of all the audiences who had gone before. Does a certain venue or environment have any influence on acting or are you more concerned with your preparation and the people you are collaborating with creating a world within that environment, but not necessarily connected to it.

Every good director respects the space that he is working in. The same play can be changed radically by taking it on the road into different spaces. My favorites, like most actors, are the old spaces because you are right - all the people have left their mark on that space. You can almost smell them. Sometimes you see their ghosts. (Corny but true)

Describe your average day. For example, what did you do today?

I have no average day. At least 3-4 times a month I wake up in a different place than the day before. Within the past week I've been in L.A., Northern California, and Germany. I bought a new home, but still don't feel moved in. I'm looking forward to having an average day.

What does "seven lonely oceans" refer to in your song "Bad?" I've never really understood that lyric.

I was trying to find a phrase that described my lover's deep pain and beautiful mystery. The ocean is probably the most recurring image in all of my songs. I talk about that a lot.

You said in one interview that you believed Shakespeare believed in equality, that he was very modern-minded when it came to the relations between men and women. How then do you interpret "Taming of the Shrew"?

Kate is not a shrew. She's just smarter than everyone else. She's wiser than everyone else and cannot find her equal until Petruchio shows up. He is her equal and it's delightful to watch him prove that - it's a happy ending to watch two people find their equals.

Next session: June 15

Brian Lynch Answers Your Questions About Spike: Asylum (comic)
From: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=335358&blogID=121371605&Mytoken=DC6CCD59-D8C2-463C-81F26CA8B1496D9B1201143250

Answering your questions about SPIKE: ASYLUM

Current mood: answery

I learned something very interesting this week. Being friends with Kevin Smith and also writing a SPIKE comic creates the perfect storm of internet awesomeness. If I was as popular as I was in high school as I am in my gmail inbox, I would have dated a cheerleader and not cried myself to sleep every night.

Once we announced SPIKE: ASYLUM was coming from IDW in September, a lot of people had questions. And the following are answers to the most oft-asked queries. Let's have some fun, shall we?

1. When does SPIKE: ASYLUM take place?

That's a good question, internet. And my answer is going to be vague: Spike is in Los Angeles, and he has a soul, and he's up and about and able to touch (and punch and kick and bite...and also hug...I'd assume. Three issues in and he does not hug anyone. Maybe for SPIKE: ASYLUM summer annual). But beyond that, I'm just telling the best SPIKE story I can, timelines be damned . Pick up the series and you tell us when you think it is. The first correct answer gets a hug. From Spike.

2. What cameos can we expect?

I hate to have two "pick up the comic and see" answers in a row, but I hate when cameos or references are revealed beforehand. I mean, remember ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES came out? Sean Connery at the end, that was cool, right? Imagine if the internet existed at the time, you'd know about it beforehand and you wouldn't have been excited.

Maybe you weren't excited about that. I was. Hell, I was young.

But just know that Franco Urru and I are huge ANGEL fans and there are tons of things in the comic that will make you giddy. Especially that cameo at the end from Sean Connery. DAMMIT!

3. Do Jay and Silent Bob appear?

I'm gonna say no, just because they're not part of this world (that we know of, anyway, though I always thought that Jay might be the first male slayer. He has the gorgeous hair for it).

Don't cry about this, it's actually a good thing, as humans don't last long in Whedon's shows. Think about it. Xander: lost an eye. Wesley: lost a couple girlfriends, and then died. Gunn: magic panther lawyer powers didn't save him from getting nearly gutted in the finale. Fred: Oh, poor Fred. Remember when Andrew was shocked he lived? Yeah, so was I.

Willow traded up quickly and dabbled in magic to save herself, she was smart.

And before you get all "Giles lived" on me, well, Giles is the exception that proves the rule and Giles is awesome.

So no, Jay and Silent Bob don't appear. Though Jack Bauer and the Ghostbusters do.

Kidding. Oh man that would be sweet.

4. Who are your favorite ANGEL and BUFFY characters?

The Loan Shark who was actually a shark, maybe? No? Okay then...

First and foremost, Spike has always been a favorite. The fact that he was introduced as a villain, and did (understatement about to happen) horrible things, but then became one of the biggest heroes on each series in a totally believable manner, shows you how talented the ANGEL and BUFFY writers are, and how great Marsters is. Wesley, too, go back and watch his arc and it's quite amazing.

Beyond that, Lorne and Xander. I wrote a show for Nick Brendon and got to meet him to discuss it. He read the first two episodes and responded really well to it, our meeting was one of the highpoints of my move out to Los Angeles. He's a swell guy and as funny as the character he played for seven seasons. The show didn't get picked up, but I hope to turn it into a low budget movie or, maybe, a comic book.

5. Why do you sell so much stuff that never gets made?

I have sold a lot of scripts that are in various stages of development. What do you want, my Mom says I'm super talented and very handsome but Hollywood takes it's time. And to show you what a comics fan I am, a chunk of the money I've made from the script sales have gone to doing a bunch of stuff for my site, angrynakedpat.com, including a bunch of comics, from MONKEY MAN UNLEASHED to PATCHOULI.

That said, if you want to see my handiwork, check out ROBOTS on dvd, I wrote some stuff for that movie that I'm very proud of. You can also check out SCARY MOVIE 3 but, you know, I understand if you don't want to.

6. Can you put my name in SPIKE: ASYLUM?

I would love to name characters after fans of the show. I'm knee-deep into the third issue, but if any new characters pop up I would do that, yessir. But you have to promise to buy ten copies of each issue, and also to read each and every one front to back, and also buy every great IDW book that is advertised in there.

7. How cool is Chris Ryall?

Oh, very cool. He's not just Editor in Chief of the comic company that handles ANGEL and TRANSFORMERS comics, he's also the Eisner-nominated writer of one of the best comic series out there, THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW, adapted from a story by Mr. Clive Barker. Issue two just came out, and it is really dark and great and has a lot of boobies.

He also listens to his friend's whining about writing a SPIKE series and gives in because he's awesome.

So that's it for now! Please order SPIKE: ASYLUM # 1 from IDW when it appears in the next PREVIEWS, I think you'll all dig it. Franco Urru's art is second to none, and hopefully the story ain't half-bad either.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your interest!

Things I did in the last seven days

Went to E3 and met with a video game company to talk about adapting one of their video games into a movie.

Took aspirin when I got home from E3 to help with the headache from the over-abundance of beeps and boops being blasted into my ears for two hours straight.

Found out the plot for a movie that I was writing on and off for the last two years or so, was already done, badly, and is seeking distribution. This did not bother me because (A) the movie was supposedly REALLY bad and (B) it means I could drop my script and work on something more fun.

Working on a comic series, changed a scene that took place in a cafeteria to a scene that took place in a shower.

Saw a 175 million dollar movie about a giant boat turning upside down. Wished I hadn't.

Saw Fabio while eating breakfast. He looks like Conan, only slightly less realistic.

Ordered plane tickets to come home for Vulgarthon, as they're showing my movie BIG HELIUM DOG.

Answered questions about the SPIKE: ASYLUM mini series.

Considered emailing Ryall and telling him I wanted to change the plot to one of two ideas:

VAMPIRE WAR

After a vampire explodes killing a thousand kids, the Government creates a vampire registration act, forcing all vampires to register their real names with the FBI. Angel is all for it, while Spike is not. This leads to a big vampire civil war that ends in bloodshed.

or

INFINITE VAMPIRES

Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, from "Earth-Prime" Buffyverse, break through to Sarah Michelle Gellar's "Earth-Actually Good" Buffyverse and take steps to make "Earth Prime" the one and only universe. Buffy, Angel and Spike, not really getting along, rally a band of characters from all the seasons and fight them. Oddly enough, only lame, secondary characters get killed. Your Loan Shark that is really a shark, your Kitty Fantastico.

Kristy and Sarah get into a fight, Dawn gets in the middle and winds up dying. Finally, the Actually Good Universe wins and Buffy, Angel and Spike decide to take a year off. This would set the stage for "365", a comic taking place in real time, a new issue coming out every day for a year. If the reader does NOT read a page a minute as instructed on the inside front cover, the comic would shock him or her.

Thought about these two ideas for a second, decided to go with the original SPIKE: ASYLUM.

Q.No “Buffyverse” movies?!?!?! To me that is equally as bad as hearing "Ya know, James Cameron was writing Alien 5, but Fox chose to do AvP instead!" Very disappointing news indeed. Gunn as the villain would have been an excellent twist too (not to mention it would have given him more to do). How else am I going to feed my Buffyverse habits! - Rimone
A. Yeah, Clint’s been sobbing all week about it. Whedon was apparently talking to Alyson Hannigan about doing a “Willow” telemovie, too, which would’ve been great – because she’s a doll – but sadly, that sounds like it’ll never come to fruition now either. Maybe they can get that animated series off-the-ground, now?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q.Do you know who the villain of the next “Superman” movie will be? - Robert
A. How could I? They haven’t written the script yet. One of them, definitely, is Lex Luthor though – Kevin Spacey is contracted to return. I’d be keen to see Braniac on the big screen though, that would be cool. James Marsters is doing an excellent job of playing the character on TVs “Smallville”. Not that they’ll want to use him – wanting to keep the series and the films separate, of course.

SupportSpike: Campaign #9/Updated Website

Hi All,

The Support Spike website has been updated with information for Campaign #9. I used paxo’s basic format and did a little tweaking. Take a look and let me know what you think. Then, we can start spreading the word. Basically, Amy just reconfirmed what we already knew – the network seems to be the main stumbling block.

Campaign #9: Not Fade Away

The campaign that gets specific about its priorities on how we go about supporting a Spike movie.

*We know who to target: 20th Century Fox.
Dana Walden
Twentieth Century Fox Television
10201 West Pico Blvd
Building 88, Room 30
Los Angeles, CA 90035

*We know who the players are: Tim Minear, James Marsters and Amy Acker.

*We know the format: straight to DVD.

*We write our postcards, and make efforts to praise Fox for producing Buffy/Angel, but request strong support for a Spike movie helmed by Minear, starring Marsters, and going straight to DVD. We point out that we are only a vocal minority, that there are a legion of quieter fans not sending postcards who would snap up such a film.

*We know a date: Send on or about June 20, 2006 so they will arrive by Joss Whedon's Birthday on June 23rd.

The more postcards arriving at the same time, the bigger the impact. Please feel free to use the postcards below or choose postcards from your hometown to show the diversity of the fanbase. E-mail webmaster@supportspike.com if you'd like your postcard count added to the total.

From: http://www.syfyportal.com/news.php?id=2584

Acker: 'Angel' Spin-Offs Definitely Not Happening

Former "Angel" cast member talks about spin-off movies and the plan for season six.

(May 15 2006) - When “Angel” was cancelled after its fifth season, the show ended with a cliff-hanger as Team Angel prepared to go head to head with a massive hoard of demons in an epic confrontation. Since then, however, there have been rumors of a revival for the series -- stories of a possible sixth season, a tele-movie and there has also the idea of other spin-off projects. But nothing has been confirmed as getting the go ahead. Well, speaking to fans in London this weekend (including SyFy Portal’s Alan Stanley Blair), actress Amy Acker shed some light on the status of the proposed project.

“I think its safe to say that’s not happening anymore,” Acker told fans at the Starfury event, “'cause if they were, they’d be getting done right now. There was supposed to be three of them –- one for Spike, a Faith one and also one for Willow. I think it's safe to say that now because its not going to happen.”

But unlike many other shows that bite the dust, interest in the resurrection was not the problem as thanks to the various websites and the Save Angel campaign, the show proved it had a loyal following. Instead, Acker said, the projects never took off because “Fox couldn’t get it together the way Joss wanted to do them.”

Although Acker didn’t go into details about the difference in approaches between Fox and Whedon, the actress did give away some vital information as to what the plot could have been had they gone ahead or had there been a sixth season.

“I think it’s okay to say this now, since its not happening, but I think J (who plays Charles Gunn) was to be evil in it.” she said. “He was to become a vampire really early on in this really big battle.”

Actor J August Richards, who was also at the event, quickly confirmed that was the direction he always pictured character going.

“I’d probably have him come back as a vampire and then kill himself." Added Richards. "That’s always how I wanted it to end for my character.” - Article by Alan Stanley Blair

SPIKE: ASYLUM coming in September!

Current mood: Whedony

I'm writing a five issue mini series for IDW Publishing called SPIKE: ASYLUM. The cover to issue one is among my pictures, go click and check it it out.

The series is being drawn by Franco Urro, who is more talented than me and it is an honor to work with him. He lives in someplace named "Italy", which I think is in Florida.

It stars Spike from ANGEL and BUFFY, so I'm in dork heaven. Spike is a vampire who used to be bad, but then he fell in love with Buffy and fought for a soul, so he could be good. Now he's trying to make amends for all the bad crap he's done, but he's still snarky and a smart-ass.

Anyway, it's scary and loaded with action and pretty funny, so I hope you get it when it comes out. Issue one is solicited in next month's PREVIEWS. First issue comes out in September, and then each issue will be released a month after.

Any questions? I got answers!

Joss, what's up with Spike?
Posted by Clint Morris on May 10, 2006

Near a year since it was initially rumoured/whispered/announced/muttered/speculated, there’s no still no signs of the much-hankered for "Buffy" spin-off telemovie, "Spike", which would’ve seen James Marsters help increase the sales of KMS Color Vitality Blonde Treatment (again). So what’s the deal? Happening, or has it been as smoked as premium-priced ham?

Most say it’s not happening - because creator Joss Whedon is simply, too busy - whilst others say there’s still a chance. I’ll save my feelings for a soundproof concrete pipe on the matter... because frankly, nobody wants to hear my unrelenting Buffy-obsessed opinion on the matter.

Talking to IESB, the terribly busy writer/director said he’s "got no idea" whether the "Spike" movie will happen. "I’ve pretty much said everything I can on the subject, I’ve pitched it every way I can, and I’ve tried to work it... now I’ve just got to... wait".

Ouch. Sounds like someone ‘else’ might have actually put a stop to said telemovie, hey?

Smallville - "Oracle" (#5.21) Review
From: http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/05/05/smallville-oracle/

Smallville: Oracle
Posted May 5th 2006 10:33AM by Lacy Hall
Filed under: Drama, Sci-Fi, OpEd, WB, Smallville

(S05E21) Whew. I don't know how I feel about last night's episode. Basically, it confused the crap out of me, but I think that was the point. It was all just a tease for the finale, which is next Thursday.

Still, there was a lot of stuff that the writers could have tidied up a bit. Namely, the Kryptonian Alphabet. How come Clark can't read Kryptonian letters? Didn't he learn Kryptonian back in like Season 2? Here is Lionel handing him a treasure map of Kryptonian goodness and Clark just shrugs and goes, "What does it say? I don't know." That was just dumb.

The only reason I can think that they did that was so Chloe would have something to do, i.e. crack the Kryptonian alphabet. And I was absolutely amazed that she was able to do it by simply scanning a page of Lionel's notebook. Chloe, Trans-Galaxy Code Breaker? Wow! She should really reconsider her internship at The Daily Planet and maybe start working for the CIA or something. Or the writers should just have mercy on Chloe, and kill her off if they aren't going to use her for something actually meaningful on the show.

But let's talk about my favorite little bundle of bald evil -- Lex. Whether he realizes it or not, he now knows that Clark has a Krypton-weakness (thanks Lana). If poor Lex doesn't end up having his memory erased for the millionth time, then this could really make things interesting in the upcoming seasons. I'm glad that Lex and Lana have built their relationship on honesty, but I thought that it was pretty lame for Lex to just completely divulge everything about the super vaccine to Lana. I don't think that Lex would've ever done that. Even when Lex is being good, he's not that good. He always covers his bases by lying at least a little bit.

I must say that I was surprised by Lana divulging all her relationship woes to Lois. And what was up with the, "He's NOT my boyfriend!" yelp. He's not your boyfriend? Ummm, I think he is. She sounded like a fourth-grader. I guess Lana has to girl-talk to somebody and the only other girl on the show is Chloe and she's so far up Clark's butt, it would be impossible to really talk to her.

Does anybody else think that it was weird that Clark just left poor Lex on the ground after he got juiced with Brainiac's cocktail? True, Clark saw that Lex was waking up, but it seemed very un-hero of him to just leave the poor guy amongst the exploding lab equipment. I think that was a mistake on the director's part. I think they could have written that or edited it a little better. So, what do you think Lex is going to do next week with his new Terminator 2/Wolverine healing powers? Is he going to be a vessel for General Zod, or get into a showdown with Arnold Schwarzenegger?

By the way, I absolutely love it when Jonathan Kent and Clark fight! They really should have given Jonathan more ass-kicking scenes when he was still alive. Finally, this is a random thought, but it really bugged me when Lex showed up at the end with that bag of Chinese take-out. Would Lex really buy your run of the mill Chinese take-out? See, it's little things like that that really annoy me with the writers. Lex is supposed to be this eccentric power-hungry gazillionaire, and he's bringing home General Tao's Chicken? I don't think so.
