James Marsters & Friends: Watch Out Blondie Bear
From: James Marsters Live

JAMES MARSTERS & FRIENDS: WATCH OUT BLONDIE BEAR

Canadian-born actress Mercedes McNab is the latest star guest to join in the fun aboard the Queen Mary in James Marsters And Friends in September.

Mercedes moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was nine and made her professional acting debut when she was just 10 years old. Her Yorkshire-born father, Bob, was a member of Arsenal Football Club in the UK and played for England.

Mercedes played the young girl scout in the hit movie The Addams Family and has appeared on TV in Harry And The Hendersons, Touched By An Angel and Walker, Texas Ranger.

But she is probably best known to TV audiences for playing Harmony Kendall in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Harmony was one of Cordelia's circle of friends until she was bitten by a vampire at the high school graduation day. She promptly lost her undead heart to Spike - her Blondie Bear - but realised it wasn't to be when he tried to stake her. Harmony went on to become a career girl as Angel's PA in Wolfram And Hart.

Mercedes has been busy this year filming horror movie Hatchet and comedy short Miles From Home.

James Answers Your Questions!

Here is this month's session. We like to toss in fun questions to balance out the more serious in tone - people really enjoy seeing the "lighter" side of James and he seems to get a kick out it too.

What do you do when you find yourself working with an actor who gives you nothing to play against?

Good question. Unfortunately there is no other fix than to take what the actor is giving you. You can’t pretend they are doing something else. You just have to again cleave to your objective and try to wring something out of that person no matter how boring they might be.

Spike was written as being a nit with both women and diabolical plan execution. But he seemed to be an intuitive and shrewd observer of people when it came to calling them on their crap, as in the "you'll never be friends" speech to Buffy and Angel, knowing just how to set the Scoobies against each other, or understanding that Buffy was really mad at herself when she played “kick the Spike.” Can you talk about that contradiction in his personality, how it was written and how you decided to play it?

I love contradictions in characters and you are right - sometimes Spike would seem very dim and sometimes he would border on wise. But I recognize myself in that too.

Do you believe in fate or do you prefer feeling in control of your own destiny?

I don’t believe in fate but I do not believe that anyone is at all in control of anything in their lives, much less their own destiny. We are in the middle of a beautiful, terrifying mystery and we are just lucky that the earth is being kind to us just now.

When directing/playing Macbeth, is it your intention to make the audience sympathize with the main character?

That is always the intention of story-telling. One hopefully always sympathizes with the lead in a play. I think Shakespeare wanted us to recognize that Macbeth is just like us even when he takes himself into hell. He goes to hell because he is ambitious, but who amongst us isn’t?

Why did you change the title of "Runaway" to "No Promises?"

(Laughs) Because everyone kept singing the chorus. I keep hearing people singing “please, no promises.”

When you write a new song, does it come from an idea that you have, or an emotion? Along those same lines, if you absolutely had to choose, would you prefer a project that made the audience feel or made them think?

In the world of music it's definitely how you make them feel. I can name 25 albums that have had a major impact on how I view the world, but that all started from an emotional truth that the music spoke to. Music runs afoul when it gets too intellectual. If you compare Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief" to Marvin Gaye's 1970's protest album "What's Going On" you'll see what I mean. Marvin got to the simple emotional truth about war's ability to smash love and is a better anti-war statement than Radiohead has yet devised. If you look at the Sex Pistol's monster album, "Never Mind the Bollocks", you find an incendiary treatise on the sustained class warfare that the rich have been waging on the working class in England for as long as anyone can remember, yet they made that point in a simple screaming, raging statement "No future for me!"

If we looked in your refrigerator, what would we see?

(Laughs) Orange juice, milk, Eggo Waffles, tortellini and old chicken (inedible) Um, um, um... and fruits which are looking questionable.

Next session: July 15

(SPOILER) Spike comic mini-series promo ad. The initial cover ad for the upcoming Spike Asylum comic series, a five part mini-series to be published in September. Written by Brian Lynch.

Basically poster art posted by Brian on his Myspace page...he has been updating the progress for some time. Looks good! According to his blog today, this is the first "official" ad and he just received permission to release the picture! Poster gives a really sketchy plot overview so I included "Spoiler" tag to be safe.

Smallville - Will Clark embrace his destiny? Season 5 comes this Sept! **Updated with Art**
Posted by Gord Lacey
5/31/2006

Clark Kent now carries a full load of classes at Central Kansas U., but that's not all he carries. He carries the full weight of his - perhaps the world's - destiny. "We call this season Superman in Training," series co-creator Alfred Gough says. "Clark is going to accept his destiny." During this exciting pivotal season: The Fortress of Solitude rises. Clark faces rogue Kryptonians. Lex Luthor launches a vicious political campaign. A dark tragedy - one even Clark's powers can't prevent - strikes. These and more key elements of Superman lore fall into place. The future Man of Steel grows another year bolder in this bonus-packed Deluxe 6-Disc DVD Set.

Warner Bros has scheduled Smallville: The Complete 5th Season for September 12; season 6 will premiere on The CW a few weeks later. The 6 disc set will contain all 22 episodes, and retail for $59.98. The Smallville sets have had some great extras (with the exception of season 1), and while we don't have anything official yet, our friends at KryptonSite.com have posted some material in their "Rumorville" section. The first extra is the Webisodes which we reported on earlier, but they also have information on a few commentary tracks that will be on the set.

There were some good guest stars in the fifth season of the show. Look for the ever-popular James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) in a recurring role, Kenny Johnson (The Shield), Carrie Fisher (Star Wars Trilogy), Tom Wopat (The Dukes of Hazzard), Callum Keith Rennie (Da Vinci's Inquest) and Ian Tracey (Da Vinci's Inquest).

Here's a look at the season 5 artwork:
