Tragic News on Alias, Comedy from The Office and Red-Hot Scoop on Veronica and Smallville! by Kristin Veitch | July 29, 2005 Fortress of Scooptitude: Tom Welling tells me he's thrilled James Marsters is joining Smallville as Clark's latest nemesis, Brainiac. "I'm very interested to see who Brainiac was in his younger years, and I'm very interested to see James without the accent and the blond hair." And how. Tom also reveals to me he will be directing an episode this season. "It seems the pool is empty as far as directors go, I guess, and so they're bringing me in. It will be [my first directing gig]. I'm very excited. At this point, I'm only doing one. I think they're waiting to see maybe what it turns out to be." Other morsels on the coming season? Tom says he's "really looking forward to Tom Wopat and John Schneider being mortal enemies." (You know they are former Dukes of Hazzard costars, right?) Also, "More will happen in season five than what's happened in the first four seasons combined. We have the Fortress of Solitude. And it is season five, so we have to start moving some of these relationships closer to where we know they're going to end up. The Clark-Lex relationship. The Lana-Clark relationship--why isn't she a part of Superman's life? We're gonna find out. The Lana-Lex relationship. I mean, there are some firecrackers there."

James will no longer be working with Julie Caitlin Brown as his convention booking agent – this is 100% amicable between both parties. On behalf of James and myself, we’d like to thank Julie for all her tireless energy on behalf of James. If it weren’t for Julie than many of the conventions James was able to participate in would have never happened and run so smoothly.

NEWS FLASH 7/25/05
I know, who the hell is Agent Dox? Well, thanks to Dru @ jamesmarstersfans, someone from James' site got back to her with this: Agent Dox is the name of James' character on Smallville on the contract. That's why Steve used it on the website. And here's some more info: From: Ro @ SupportSpike Dox is the name of the alien intelligence that takes over Professor Fine's mind, thus bringing forth Brainiac. From: Jennifer @ SupportSpike Well, in the comics he's known as both Vril Dox and Brainiac. The villian gets the name Brainic from his host Milton Fine who is a sideshow mentalist who used "Brainiac" as a stage name. -- "Vril Dox is a radical Coluan scientist who, having attempted to overthrow the Computer Tyrants, was sentenced to death. In his last moments, his consciousness was attracted to Earthly sideshow mentalist Milton Fine, who worked under the alias 'Brainiac'." -- "A ruthless genius from the planet Colu, Vril Dox was considered a dangerous rival by the tyrannical rulers of his homeworld. In an effort to put an end to his potential threat, Colu's leaders reduced Dox to his component atoms and spread them across the galaxy. However, Dox's consciousness was somehow able to survive his disentigration and began to search for a new host body. Making his way to Earth, Dox found circus sideshow mentalist Milton Fine. Dox then took over Fine's body and tapped into his host's latent mental abilities. In time, Dox transformed Fine into the intergalactic villain known as Brainiac."

'Smallville' Introduces More DC Comic Characters
Author: Alan Stanley Blair
The following contains MINOR spoilers for the fifth season of "Smallville." Part of what makes "Smallville" one of those shows you just have to watch is the way it borrows the best from the pre-established Superman mythos and is able to weave its own plot-arcs around it. It is for that reason that many fans of the series will be more excited than ever, as the show will be exploring a rather large slice of that mythology and will be throwing a few more Kryptonian's into the mix. To that effect, a few familiar faces will be making an appearance during the fifth season, including Brainiac, played by James Marsters, best known for his role as Spike, the somewhat evil British vampire in both "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and its spin-off "Angel." But only this time, he will be missing the British accent and blond hair that shot the actor to fame on both shows, according to the Comics Continuum website. "Joining us this season will be another famous character from Superman lore, Milton Fine, also known as Brainiac," series star Tom Welling said at a press event for the WB network. Executive producer Al Gough has confirmed that the character of Brianiac will be introduced this season, and that he and the other writers have been thinking about Marsters for the part from the beginning. "We always thought he was fantastic in 'Buffy' and then in 'Angel,' and he just felt like he'd be a good fit for this character," he said. "He was always sort of the first guy we wanted, and we met with him and told him the arc for what we wanted for Milton Fine as Brainiac." The character will be introduced as a college professor tutoring Clark, but will begin working to turn the would-be super hero against the human race in order to fulfill his Kryptonian destiny. "He's a wonderful actor beyond being Spike, so I think he'll bring all of that to the role," added Gough. "We've talked about it, and what's nice is, he's going to be one of Clark's college professors. It's more of the grand seduction of Clark Kent rather than someone coming in and them throwing each other around. And I think James is really up for the challenge." The character of Brainiac is described as having a superior knowledge and has come to Earth with a deadly secret regarding the true fate of Krypton and of Clark's biological heritage. His mere presence will be enough to deteriorate the already degraded relationship between Clark and his soon-to-be rival Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). In addition to Brainiac, Aquaman will also be skipping through Smallville and stirring up trouble through his relationship with Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance. So far, there has been no announcement of who will be playing the character. Smallville returns to the screens on Thursday, September 29.

Press Tour Day 4 (The WB): Heaven and Hell!
11:50 I’ve got 10 minutes before my dentist appointment so I better grab that mic and ask my requisite Spike movie question. 11:50:30 "We would love to do a Joss Whedon-produced Spike movie with James Marsters [reprising his role from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel]," Janollari replies. "Up until very recently, Joss has been [readying the big-screen] Wonder Woman, so his availability has not been there. I believe he may become more available this year. We would gladly do a Spike movie if the two of them want to do it." 3:15 Back at the Beverly Hilton, I find a reporter and ask for a quick rundown of everything I missed. Apparently, former Friends producer Marta Kauffman gave what amounted to the single most boring monologue in press-tour history at the start of the Related session. And Smallville’s Tom Welling, after announcing that James Marsters would be doing six episodes as Brainiac, won critics over with the single most engaging monologue in press-tour history. But unlike Kauffman, who rambled on for what reportedly felt like hours, Welling was run off stage after just 10 minutes.

Spike vs. Superman?
Blondie Boy's returning to the Box - again, at the Frog. Former "Buffy" and "Angel" star James Marsters has signed on the straight line to play the evil Brainiac in a multi-episode stint on TV's "Smallville". Marsters will wear the trousers of college professor Milton Fine, alter ego of the classic Superman foe Brainiac. Possessed of a vast, superior knowledge limited only by his hubris and emotions, Brainiac comes to earth armed with a secret about Clark's biological family and the truth about Krypton's demise. Brainiac's presence in Smallville will have a devastating effect on Clark and Lex's already deteriorating friendship. Marsters makes his first appearance on the show in the episode airing October 13. Also, veteran actor Tom Wopat will reunite with "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star John Schneider, who plays Jonathan Kent on the show, for one episode. Wopat will play a state senator who was a boyhood friend of Kent.

Additionally, one episode this season will reunite series star John Schneider with his former "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star, Tom Wopat. Marsters plays college professor Milton Fine, alter ego of the uber-villain Brainiac. Brainiac is the latest DC Comics character to appear in SMALLVILLE. July 22, 2005
At some point last week, I began receiving a number of requests as to whether the actor formerly known as "Buffy's" boy toy Spike would be showing up on the tube again soon. Well, about two hours ago, Tom Welling (a.k.a. young Clark Kent) sauntered before us to settle those rumors. Marsters is joining the cast of "Smallville" next season as professor Milton Fine, whom comic book geeks know as Brainiac, one of Superman's greatest foes. He has committed to a number of episodes, according to the accompanying press release. The series premieres at 8 p.m. September 29, and no, Marsters isn't bringing that sexy British accent with him. For all you "Buffy" fanatics keeping track, that means Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Seth Green (Oz), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), David Boreanaz (Angel) and Marsters all have a regular presence on your television screen this fall. Marsters' casting may be sweetest of all, since it brings him back to the network that launched him to fame. And frankly, The WB can use his help. It's no secret that the network formerly known as The Frog did not enjoy its best season in 2004-2005. This year, The WB wants to reclaim its cool by any means necessary, using strategic hires as a start. Marsters' return was only one of several surprising casting announcements. Welling also revealed that Tom Wopat would be joining the cast, reuniting him with his "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star John Schneider, who plays Clark's dad. Then Welling added that this year, "Smallville" is digging deeper into the comic book's lore by having Clark explore the Fortress of Solitude and meet the lamest superhero ever, Aquaman. That Welling, he's a talkative guy.

Marsters Stakes Claim to 'Smallville'
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) For all the things vampire Spike was on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," one thing he typically was not was the sharpest stake in the drawer. That's about to change for the man who played him, James Marsters. Marsters will join the cast of "Smallville" this season, playing a classic villain from the DC Comics universe: Professor Milton Fine, better known as Brainiac. The WB confirmed a percolating rumor of Marsters' casting Friday (July 22) at the Television Critics Association press tour. The "Smallville" stint may not be the only work on The WB for Marsters. Network head David Janollari says he would "gladly" do a TV movie featuring the Spike character if Marsters and "Buffy"/"Angel" creator Joss Whedon want to do one. In addition to Brainiac, the fifth season of "Smallville" -- which moves to the ultra-competitive 8 p.m. ET Thursday spot this fall -- will feature an appearance by fellow DC hero Aquaman (not played, unfortunately, by "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier, who's on the verge of filming an "Aquaman" movie in that show). "He dates Lois Lane [Erica Durance]," says series star Tom Welling, who made the announcement to the assembled critics. "That's not on here, but I'm going to tell you that anyway." Also this season, Tom Wopat will reunite with his former "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star, John Schneider, for an episode. Wopat will play a childhood friend of Jonathan Kent's (Schneider) who's now a state senator.

Comic-Con 2005: Spiked Blood
July 21, 2005 - Typically, "Have a pint" signifies an offer of beer. However, last weekend in San Diego is was more often associated with the annual Robert A Heinlein Blood Drive. The previous record of 372 pints of donated blood was shattered at this year's Con with the new mark set at 596 pints. The sudden rise in generosity can be largely attributed to Diamond Select Toys' offer of 500 limited edition Spike action figures. The toy, featuring an unpainted Spike from Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was offered up to the first 500 donors. When workers arrived Friday morning, they found 110 anxious donors already in line. "We are thrilled at the response that we got from our fans!" said Chuck Terceira, Director of Diamond Select Toys. "The bottom line is that Diamond Select helped Comic-Con put on a successful blood drive, and thanks to Buffy fans it was record-breaking!" You don't have to wait until next year to donate blood. You can offer up your plasma for the good of mankind any day of the week. We'll have to wait a year to see what Diamond Select can offer in an attempt to break this year's outstanding mark.

Announcement: *SPIKE MOVIE!? (FROM KRISTIN)*
Yes, it's really me. Kristin Veitch. (Soon to be Vartan.) So ... HOLY POOP! Just talked to Alyson Hannigan (LOVE HER) at CBS' panel session for "How I Met Your Mother." When asked about the possibility of a Buffy movie, she said "last I heard, they were doing a Spike movie" and that it would be "straight to DVD." (!!!) Could this be the "big new project" James Marsters was alluding to? Alyson also said she's THRILLED that Charisma Carpenter is joining Veronica Mars and would love to get back on that show and have a reunion. (Dare we dream?) More on that in this Friday's column, and I'll be checking in HERE with more scoop in the meantime.

From LucieBluebear: Know anything about Mr. Marsters' new TV project? Please, please, do spill! I can tell you he is in final negotiations for something, but that's all my source would tell me. His personal rep would only say "No, sorry" when I asked for the teensiest morsel of info. Clearly, whatever it is, it's big enough everyone wants to keep it tippy-top secret. (Whee!) But you did hear about that other Buffy alum joining Veronica Mars, right?

5… 4… 3… By Blair Marnell Welcome to our second annual “Countdown to San Diego” edition of ATR. Ladies and gents, we are on the verge of the biggest comic convention of the year. All the news and rumors this week are just a taste of what’s to come. Which isn’t to say we don’t have a lot to go over… Not at all. [clipped] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solve My Mystery IDW’s first Spike one-shot hasn’t hit yet, but there’s already word that a second one-shot is in the works, for a January 2006 release. Reportedly, the second Spike one-shot will be primarily set in Los Angeles during the 1940s, with Spike coming under suspicion of being the infamous Black Dahlia killer. Angel, Fred and Los Hermanos Numeros are also said to make appearances in the story. The artist for the second one-shot will be Fernando Goni, who also drew the first one-shot. However, Peter David will not be writing this one… it will be someone new… This Has A “Happy Meals With Legs” Factor of Nine Out of Ten

( No news yet of whether 'Mike' did anything vigorously at the time as well, but we're hoping Foolish was wearing waterproof clothing just in case). Yay, a series!!! Sorry X-Men fans, but I'd much rather see James on our screens each week than in a movie sequel sequel.

July 6, 2005 - There's a sweet irony in Diamond Select Toys' newly-announced Comic-Con giveaway. Diamond Select is offering 500 limited edition Buffy the Vampire Slayer T1 Spike figures to those who donate blood at next week's San Diego Comic-Con. The annual Blood Drive, which is now in its 29th year, has offered plenty of goodies in the past, but few as tantalizing as this exclusive Spike figure. The unpainted figure of Spike from Buffy Season 5 will be made available only to the first 500 donators. The ultimate goal is to shatter the previous record of 362 pints donated at a single Comic-Con. So long as there are no Spike figures left when the lights go off on Sunday, July 17, that record will be history. "What better way for fans of a show about vampires to do some good than to participate in a blood drive?" said Chuck Terceira, Director of Diamond Select Toys. "The previous record for blood collection was impressive, but when we exchange all 500 of our Spike figures for pints of blood we will shatter that record." With more than 70,000 attendees expected at this year's Comic-Con, it shouldn't be too difficult to find 500 generous Buffy fans. "We are pleased to have Diamond Select on board to support the Blood Drive, there donation of such a limited edition collectible will certainly help the awareness and success of the annual event," said Comic-Con Director of Marketing and Public Relations, David Glanzer. Stakes high as 'Buffy' fans prepare for big convention
In every generation, there is a chosen one. Since the final episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" two years ago, some people may have forgotten who that chosen one was. This weekend, more than 200 fans will gather in Sacramento to remember. The show, about a former cheerleader who battled evil, ran for seven seasons, first on the WB and later on UPN. "What the show touched on for a lot of people is the empowerment of the individual," said Ginger Graves, a night pharmacist in Bangor, Maine, and one of the convention's organizers. "Sometimes you get an intellectual conversation about it. Sometimes you're like, 'Go, girl - kick butt!'" The Whedonverse & Beyond Convention runs Friday through Sunday at the Doubletree Hotel, 2001 Point West Way. (The event is named for Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy" and the spin-off series "Angel.") Fans won't get an interview with a vampire, but they can take a picture with one. Others might bring wooden stakes - for actors to sign. We talked with Graves about a gothic Disneyland, notions of geekiness and the search for redemption. Q: What do fans find appealing about the show? A: Buffy was the only one; she was the Slayer. Nobody knew how she felt. So many teens feel like they're the only one who's different, that they're alone even when they're not. For women, it's good to see a pretty young girl out there with power. With characters like Angel, it was more about redemption. ... I think that theme touched people. It's "Hey, I know I've been bad, but I'm not going to do that anymore" and trying to redeem yourself in society and with yourself. Q: Do you think outsiders understand the world of fandom? A: My biggest gripe is the belief "You're a bunch of geeky losers." That's not the case. Not from the people I've met, anyway. There are people from all over the world: doctors, lawyers, accountants, secretaries, teachers. I don't think I've met any politicians who've admitted it. I'm as excited to see friends I haven't seen in awhile as I am that James Marsters (who played Spike) is coming. We're just fans. You don't make fun of people who go to football games and paint themselves blue. It's fun for them; this is fun for us. You carry a stake in your suitcase to be autographed, whatever. That's fun. Then you go back to work on Monday. Q: You're a "Buffy" fan who teamed up with two friends to organize this convention. Why? A: My partners Ingrid (Orozco), Marlaine (Wade) and I - we've been going to conventions for years and volunteering at different ones. Between the three of us, we've done 30 or so, not always working. My first one was a "Star Trek" convention at least 10 or 15 years ago. Ingrid goes back to "Highlander." You always look at something you want to do this way or that way, but you're under the mercy of someone else. We thought, well, we'll do it our way. Q: What are some of your goals for this convention? A: One of our goals was to make it a smaller event so you don't feel like there's 800 people behind you rushing you through the autograph line. Lots of people who are coming have met the actors before, but some haven't. You're not going to take 15 minutes and have tea with somebody, but you're not going to feel a crush of people going "Hurry, hurry, hurry." When you get down to it, it's a lot of money: travel and hotels and buying different tickets. Then you put vacation time in. It's like Disneyland for people. I just want them to have a blast. Then I'll come home and sleep for a week. Q: Since you've never organized a convention before, was it difficult to book actors? A: We hired a convention consultant who did most of our booking. But because we've been to conventions over the years and volunteered, they've seen our work ethic. That, and they got paid. The consultant we hired is also the manager for some of them. Q: Why did you choose Sacramento? A: It's easier to shift actors up there than back East. We wanted San Diego, but they have the comic book convention, and there were things going on in Los Angeles. So someone said, Sacramento is the capital, why not there? Q: How far will fans travel for the convention? A: There's a smattering of Midwest, East Coast, Southern. There's a woman coming in from Mexico, and several people from the U.K. I think a few Canadians are coming down. A lady in Austria said, "I can't come but (that she would pay for photographs of cast members.)" Q: What are the demographics of the fandom? A: I saw a woman bring a little kid once who was 3 or 4 years old. He toddles up to James Marsters in the photo line and goes "Spike!" I met 10-or 12-year-olds from the U.K. last year. They were sweet on Danny Strong. Then I've met women in their 70s. There's a huge age range, but a lot of them fall into my age range, 30s and 40s. Even when the really pretty actors show up, ("Buffy" convention attendees) tend to be predominantly women. Convention-wise, you're talking people who have a certain amount of disposable income. Q: Do you plan to organize more conventions? A: "Buffy" and "Angel" have been off the air for a couple years. We'll sit back and look at other fandoms out there, say, "The 4400," "Veronica Mars," "Battlestar Galactica." ... We haven't decided yet. You have to look at who your customers are, what fandom is coming up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
