Exclusive! James Marsters Returning to Smallville
Categories: smallville

Just a little giddy good news to help ring in the new season of Smallville, which starts tomorrow night.

Reliable insiders tell me—and the CW confirms—that James Marsters (swoon, Buffy's Spike) is returning for four episodes of the superseries during the new season.

We last saw Marsters's character, Dr. Milton Fine (aka Brainiac), in Smallville's fifth season finale.

While it's unclear exactly how James is returning, I can tell you he's reprising the exact same character, he's returning to set very soon and his episodes begin airing in January. He also appears on CBS' Without a Trace this season.

'Tis good news, no? If you're happy and you know it, sound off in the Comments section below!

And don't forget to tune in to Smallville tomorrow night.

Trailer: "P.S. I Love You"
From: http://www.canmag.com/nw/9016-ps-i-love-you-trailer

P.S. I Love You Trailer
Movie Trailers September 19, 2007

Alright Gerard Butler fans -- don't freak out -- but it turns out that Butler's character in PS. I Love You is dead, yes, dead for almost the film's entire running. In what looks like a depressing love story, we now have the film's first trailer.

Movie Trailer: P.S. I Love You

Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is beautiful, smart, and married to the love of her life—a passionate, funny and impetuous Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler). So when Gerry’s life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it’s a good thing he planned ahead. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief but in rediscovering herself.

Can somebody say chick flick? And a depressing one at that! Though the lady audiences are bound to get a ton of glimpses of Butler through flashbacks and the film's opening minutes, they might have to settle for Butler's (diminished) accent as it comes through a tape recorder.

I'm already getting teary-eyed.

P.S. I Love You opens to theaters on December 21, 2007.

For more movie info, go to the P.S. I Love You Movie Page.

JM.com: Superman: Doomsday Site/Reviews
From: http://www.jamesmarsters.com/home.html

Make sure you visit the official Superman Doomsday site if you haven't already. A great site. Also, thanks to the fans who shared some of the terrific reviews James has been getting from his role as Lex Luthor:

"...Whedon-veterans Adam Baldwin and James Marsters are a delight to listen to in their respective roles. Clancy Brown loyalists, I dare you to not love Marsters’ rendition!" -The Animation Insider

"Adam Baldwin and James Marsters, however, are the definite highlights of the film... Marsters Luthor is perfectly sinister and I daresay it rivals Clancy Brown’s. As blasphemous as that my sound, I surprised myself while typing that, but after watching the film a couple times, Marsters really gives a rocking performance that is easily one of the highlights of the film. As cool as the original cast for these characters is, one of the exciting things about these films is the new cast we get to hear new interpretations and without Marsters in this film, I doubt it would have much of a lasting appeal."

"James Marsters assumes the role of Lex Luthor and, yes, he’s a scumbag here. He’s evil, manipulative, and so slimy. Marsters brings an indescribable ooziness to Luthor, one that I don’t think even Clancy Brown could’ve brought. He’s just so . . . slimy and cold." - World's Finest Online

JM.com: September Q&A
From: http://www.jamesmarsters.com/qa.html

September

What do you think is the greatest musical instrument ever invented and why?
I think possibly the synthesizer. It used to take 100 - 500 years for a new instrument to assimilate itself into the orchestral, musical experience. They'd come up with a violin and everyone would go crazy and the next 500 years would be all about how do we incorporate the violin into our music. Now every new single that comes out has an incredibly distinct, synthesized sound, which is tantamount to developing your own new musical instrument. That goes way past the best violinist anyone has ever heard because even the best violinist that has been heard in 200 years is only playing the same instrument that's been played for 200 years and his song will sound very similar to the "hacks" that had preceded him. But the engineer that comes up with a new synthesized sound that has a human resonance, it's as if he's made a whole new instrument and the possibilities from where I sit are endless. So, it's definitely keyboards, computers and synthesizers - and that's really hard for a guitarist to admit.

What was the last play you saw?
I think it was The Master Builder by Ibsen starring Sir Ian McKellan. I didn’t enjoy it. It was the last chance I gave my local theater company after being let down too many times before.

It’s a great compliment for an actor to say that the person playing opposite them was “generous” in his or her performance. What does that generosity mean to you? Do you consider yourself a generous performer?
Very good question! Generosity in film means that when you are off-camera acting for the other actor's close up, you give as much as you did in YOUR close up. It seems like a no-brainer that everyone would want to give as much in their off-camera work as their on-camera work because it helps everybody, but you'd be surprised how many perfectly wonderful actors are forced to work with stand-ins for their close ups, which are the most dangerous shots when the camera is so close to you and can pick up any lie. That's when you need your acting partner the most. It's unfortunate that at that time so many actors decide to head to the trailer. I consider myself a very generous performer. In fact, I think I give a better performance off camera than I do on. Because I have no pressure off-camera, I can improvise with impunity, trying to elicit some real reaction from my acting partner that they didn't plan on. Sometimes they get mad because I will change it up so dramatically, but I'm trying to give them a moment that's truly real, trying to make something happen for the first time - the camera wants to catch you being surprised. That's what makes good film. So if you stay in your trailer, half your job, you're abdicating.

If you could say one thing to Spike, give him a piece of advice, and/or converse with him about anything... what would you choose and why?
Get over Buffy - you deserve better! (laughs)

How do you react to criticism, professionally and personally?
If I wrote it, criticism is hard. I feel that anyone who is writing their inner life is doing something very brave and, in a way, is beyond criticism. How can you criticize someone for telling you how they feel? I have a hard time criticizing most artists who write their material for that reason actually. If they've been honest and brave and set it out there, if it's ugly or beautiful and if I don't think of it as worthy, it's probably my fault. So it's very hard for me when my own work is dissed. It's less hard, more mechanical, if I'm looking at a playwright and I feel like a play can work but I get a bad review, I kind of feel like I'm a mechanic working on a carburetor thinking I just need to add 3 cm to whatever and the thing will start on time and run like I want it to run. So it becomes less personal. If you write it yourself, it's very personal.

Either/Or

Bacon or Sausage?
Bacon because it can be rendered crispy without ruining it.

Christmas lights - all white, or multicolored - blinking or not blinking?
All white, blinking, but not in unison. I think that the Christmas tree is most beautiful when it approximates the original Christmas tree where real fire was lit and red, yellow and green blinking lights just don't do it. I like fairy light, as I call them, the white lights. They can blink or they can be steady, but I'm liable to put them up anywhere at anytime actually. I used to light my whole theater with fairy lights and I never had a better subscription audience in that season.

Next session: October 15

JM.com: A Message from Steve
From: http://www.jamesmarsters.com/home.html

A MESSAGE FROM STEVE

I'm just catching my breath from Dragon Con and am now gearing up for James’ LA appearance in October. I wanted to personally thank everyone who attended Dragon Con to support James. So many faces are becoming more and more familiar and I'm even getting better with remembering some of your names. I wanted to thank all of you who participated in the charity auction that followed James' concert. In a matter of minutes we were able to raise $3,000 for a very worthy cause – the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation!!

James is currently juggling many career opportunities and jobs. He just completed a cameo in a movie for television called "Chasing the Devil" where he will portray serial killer Ted Bundy. He continues to work on "Without a Trace" and there are lots of other great things being ironed out as I write. In between it all he is getting into the recording studio to finish his new album.

Thank you again to everyone for all their support of James.

Best wishes and I will see some of you at the next event.

Steve Himber

Marsters May Return For More ‘Torchwood’

Marsters May Return For More ‘Torchwood’

By ALAN STANLEY BLAIR
Sep-04-2007

This story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the second season of "Torchwood."

When news hit that James Marsters would be taking on a role for the BBC series “Torchwood,” it was enough to have fans buzzing with anticipation. Now however, it looks like they might have a little more of Marsters to look forward to … in more ways than one.

The former primetime face of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" recently told fans at Dragon*Con in Atlanta that his one-time appearance on the "Doctor Who" spinoff might not be one time after all, according to TorchwoodTV. Marsters may return for a later episode this season, but the acrtor is not confirming anything until such an appearance is finalized with the powers that be.

There has been a great deal of speculation over the details of Marsters' character on the series, and also how he will fit in with the mysterious past of Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman). The No. 1 theory, however, is that he will be a temporal agent (like Jack) with a past and an agenda of his own.

"I cannot confirm or deny anything about my character on 'Torchwood,'” Marsters told the convention crowd. “But I thought Spike was nasty ... that was nothing. And they opened my eyes over in Wales, I gotta say. I mean at first I was all freaked out ‘cause this dude playing Jack, he’s like all sexy on the set and everything. And I didn’t really realize we’d be playing these Time Agent characters who’ll have sex with anything, like any thing with a hole! I’m serious.”

Other rumors for the series have also indicated that the character will have a bit of a fling with Jack, and Marsters' comments confirms that at least some of that speculation is accurate and that he himself initially had a hard time with the openness of the series.

”The first day I was like freaked out, ‘Oh God help me,’" Marsters said. "Then I got into my character and I got to understand my character and everything. And the lead character Jack goes -- he drives up in this beautiful red car -- and he goes, ‘I almost did the car.' And by this time I was totally comfortable with it and I knew that he was in character and I said ‘Well, that shiny metal is winking at you … I’d do her, too … where ‘d ya take her?’ and he said ‘Up the gas station.’ I mean like he didn’t really do that but I looked at the SUV and it’s like, 'James, steady there.'

”But it’s like, yeah, that’s a very English show,” he added. “Cut! Yeah I’m a little more comfortable with myself now."

But with recent reports that Jack's relationship with Gareth David-Lloyd's character of Ianto will heat up in the second season, fans shoudl now be asking the question of how Marsters' presence on "Torchwood" will affect that budding relationship.

The first season of "Torchwood" premieres in the United States on Sept. 8 as part of BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday lineup. The second season, which is currently in production, is set to hit the United Kingdom in early 2008.

THE Q&A

Checking in With James Marsters

The ''Buffy'' alum talks about his upcoming arc on ''Without a Trace,'' acting alongside Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Kathy Bates, and if we'll ever see him as Spike again

MARSTERS ''If you're in a cop show and your name is Dudley, you have one episode. You can't count on more than that.''
James Marsters: Steve Ross / Capital Pictures / Retna

By Vanessa Juarez

James Marsters has a theory about showbiz: ''I keep meeting people that are really, really good and they keep being really cool. If you can't get along with people, is it possible to get up to the top echelons?'' In other words, if you're socially inept, you ain't getting anywhere in Hollywood. And Marsters, who's best known for playing the immortal Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel, should be in the know, considering he's been getting around quite a bit himself lately: The 45-year-old has a five-episode arc on Without a Trace coming up, a role in Richard LaGravenese's dramedy P.S. I Love You (out Dec. 21), and a new solo record he's working on. We caught up with Marsters to talk about those projects — and to ask if there's any chance he'd revisit the bleached-blond look to play Spike again.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How are you? I hear it's your birthday.
JAMES MARSTERS: You want to sing me a song? Just kidding.

You want to sing me a song? Mine was yesterday.
Well... [Sings] Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday, Vanessa... Happy birthday to you. Okay, my turn.

[Singing] Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday, deaaaar...
James.

...Jaaaaames. I couldn't decide on whether to go with your last name or not.
[Laughs] Right on.

So I wanted to talk to you about life and things that are going on in your career, specifically Without a Trace. How'd that come about?
It was an audition like many others. Interestingly, I met Nick Brendon [who played Xander on Buffy] in the waiting room for the audition and we caught up. I'm sure he was both happy and not happy that I got the role. There's been 100 roles that I've auditioned for that I didn't get, but I didn't see Nick. The one that I meet Nick on, I beat him out of the role. So I think he's probably in the process of forgiving me for that.

What's your character like?
I play Detective Mars. He's from Baltimore and he has been working on a case for a good while and hasn't been able to crack it. The FBI in New York [on] that same case call him in to help. And then, in dramatic fashion, they stumble into something bigger than they expected.

You've been pretty busy since Buffy. What have these various experiences been like?
It was a love fest over on [TNT's Holly Hunter series] Saving Grace — I walked into a Woodstock. Everyone was coming off of having filmed a fabulous pilot and being very proud of that and really loving the experience. You have to check when they're on episode 20, see how they're doing, if they're still feeling the love. I've had some difficult ends of seasons for sure. I was in luck, I got on [for the] first episode.

What was the cast like?
I was totally outclassed by Holly Hunter. I have gotten used to being one of the older actors in a young cast. [She's] probably younger than I am, but just better. [Laughs] So effortlessly herself. I hopefully took some notes. That was a rude eye-opening but also a wonderful thing, you know: ''Keep walking, brother, you're not quite there yet.''

Any chance you'll be back?
Well, [my character] killed somebody, so unless...

I haven't actually seen the episode, to tell you the truth.
I played a character named Dudley, man. And if you're in a cop show and your name is Dudley, you have one episode. You can't count on more than that.

You also have a role in Richard LaGravenese's P.S., I Love You, with Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank.
Yeah, Hilary... Again — outclassed, man. Hilary is...just no filter at all. She really is that nice. I play the best friend of Hilary's husband [Butler], who dies of cancer but finds a way to help his wife get through the mourning process even though he's dead. Not a large role, but a nice little role, actually. And the entire cast was just outrageous.

Anyone stand out?
Kathy Bates. Really fabulous and so incredibly good it makes me nervous. [They] were filming...a very emotional scene for like 11 hours, and then they finally turned around to us and it was 2 o'clock in the morning. Kathy is sick — she's got like a fever — and she turns around to us and goes, ''Okay, guys, this is what separates the men from the boys... You ready?” She said it like a drill sergeant. I was in heaven because that's what I've been saying to younger actors for years. When times get tough, I go, ''All right, we're going to find out who can act — ready?'' I [thought], ''I'll follow you to the end of the Earth.'' And she liked my videogame when I let her play my PSP. It was a car race game, Need for Speed. She has a quality that all of my favorite people have: There is a child still left in her and it's very well protected by an adult in her as well. You wouldn't want to mess with her at all. But there's something about her that can have fun very easily, and that's just gold.

What are you watching on TV right now?
I like the Science Channel, the Discovery Channel, I like Discovery Times, which is a fabulous hybrid of the New York Times and Discovery Channel. Maybe I'm just an old man, but I like to watch that stuff. I think truth is weirder than fiction. As far as fiction, not so much, which is really ridiculous because that's what I'm trying to make my money in.

Well, you have to have a reprieve from what's going on in your career.
Yeah, but my manager gets really frustrated sometimes.

There have been rumors about a Spike spin-off. What can you tell us about that?
Joss came to me as Angel was coming down and asked me if I would be interested in that, and I said, ''Heck yeah, I'd love to work with you anytime, call me — I'll come across the Earth for you.'' But to do Spike, let's do him [before] seven years [go by], because otherwise, I'm going to get too old and vampires don't age. Frankly, I think I'm looking a little better than I thought I would, and with a decent screen test we could find out if it was still possible. It has to be believable.

[But] I don't think the character of Spike really sparked Joss' imagination. I think that he was designed to be a throwaway character that got popular with the fans. Personally, he never really got into him. Every character on the show was a version of Joss, but Joss didn't see Spike that way. Spike was the other guy. He was the guy who might mess up the show, actually, because vampires are supposed to be ugly and hated.

What about Angel?
Angel was an exception too, but Angel wasn't Joss' idea and I think by the time I came on, he was afraid that these good-looking vampires were going to take over the theme. So whenever Joss would write an episode, Spike would have, like, five lines. [Laughs] That's fine. I mean, the man gave me a job and he's a great guy and everything. What Joss has said is that he's done with television.

Any chance he'd take any of the Buffy characters to the big screen?
I think the only thing he wants to take to the big screen would be Buffy herself, and I don't think Sarah [Michelle Gellar] is interested. But you know, I can't talk for her. As far as Spike, there was some interest about a year and a half ago, but it fell apart right away.

So what's after Without a Trace — is there anything else you'd like to be in?
What's the show that my good friend, Marti Noxon, who used to head up Buffy, is heading up this year? Oh God, it's such a popular show. You know, with Dr. Dreamy...

Grey's Anatomy?
Yeah, Grey's Anatomy! They called me in to talk to me last year, so I went down to the Television Academy and watched five episodes, and that was so great. I would love to do that show. I think that show has a wit and a sparkle that just bubbles from underneath. I'd love to do House. I think everybody would like to do House right now.

Is your band Ghost of the Robot still together?
No, you know, we just got a little tiny bit famous. But some of the people...were probably too young for that experience.

What was your sound?
The thing I loved about that band is that we had a sound that I hadn't heard before. We had a pop-rock sound [that] was kind of like Jimmy Eat World but with more complex chord progressions. So the band broke up while we were recording our second album. We did very well. We sold like 60,000 copies of the first album, we toured all around the world, sold out everywhere we went.

Who were you guys signed with?
We weren't signed with anybody — we sold all of our records over the Internet and kept all of that money, which is nice. There were a couple of record companies that came to us, but the kind of contracts they were putting in front of us were just ridiculous. So I went solo after that. And it was just me and my guitar going out on the road, which was very scary in the beginning. I just got back [from] playing Jersey and Wales. I've toured all through England, and I'm working on another album right now. I've got 20 songs [that] I'm paring down to 12.

So, for the short-term: What are you doing for your birthday?
I'm shooting a fabulous TV show called Without a Trace. [Laughs] I'm going to try and save the world from horrible people, and I'm going to draw my gun manfully.

Hopefully you'll get a cake, at least.
I hope not. It's so funny when they do the cake thing on the set because they don't have time for cake. The EP doesn't get a cake on his birthday.
